I’ve put Slurry King into the liquid layer of my slurry but I’m not sure it’s working

It normally takes about 6 weeks for Slurry King to have a noticeable effect, although warm weather can speed this up a little.  The following signs can indicate that it is working, even when it is not immediately obvious:

  • The crust cracking, appearing thinner and becoming mobile (rising and falling with the wind)
  • Gaps appearing between the tank or lagoon wall and the crust
  • Bubbles coming up through the liquid layer, visible where the cracks have appeared
  • Easier and quicker mixing
  • Slurry being emptied should appear more liquid in consistency and smell less.

I’ve heard from other farmers that this product doesn’t work. Why is this?

Firstly, was the product they used a Slurry King product?

Secondly, it's very important that Slurry King is applied in the correct quantities in the correct way. We’ve known instances where the powder has been thrown over the top of the crust with the expectation it will work. It will not. The Slurry King powder must be mixed with luke-warm water and applied to the liquid layer of the slurry.

I use chemicals. As these end up in the slurry, will this reduce the effectiveness of Slurry King?

Under normal conditions, diluted chemicals present no problems to the effectiveness of the product; there have been no reported problems over the last 13 years.  However, excessive concentration of chemicals, cleaners, heavy metals or salts (from feed or water sources) and antibiotics in the slurry tank will restrict the beneficial results of Slurry King and should be limited as much as possible.

Is using slurry treated by Slurry King better than using artificial fertiliser?

No, but it’s as good as, and it is much cheaper. So it’s common sense to treat it with Slurry King and use it to best advantage, supplementing with bought-in fertiliser as needed.  Our customers save an average of up to £40 per cow and £3.60 to £6.00 per pig per year by using Slurry King to treat their slurry.

My pits are brand new. Can I start using Slurry King straight away?

Generally the answer is yes. However, new concrete pits may give an impaired performance in the first cycle through the possible high level of leached calcium, but setting up the ecosystem is usually worthwhile.

After treatment of my lagoon/pit there are no visible signs of active biodigestion. Why?

Two to three weeks after treatment of a lagoon or pit the liquids should show bubbling and biologically more active than prior to treatment.  If no activity is observed, contact us.

Odours have been reduced but I still have problems flushing the pits clean. Why?

There could be many reasons for this. Contact us so we can give you advice tailored to your particular situation.

Are there any other benefits to using Slurry King?

I have an odour problem coming from my lagoon. Will Slurry King reduce these odours?

Yes, this is one of the key benefits of Slurry King.

It reduces odour by breaking down the solids in the slurry (which is where the odours are made and stored), through its controlled micro biological and enzymatic activity.

Slurry King is totally different from conventional odour suppressing chemicals in that it functions directly on the source of the odour by enzymatically changing the molecular structure of the odour-causing compounds. Indole and skatole, two of the most potent, penetrating odourisers found in animal waste, are enzymatically reduced to odourless compounds through bio-oxidation with Slurry King. Organic amines, which produce some of the most offensive odours, are totally destroyed in the process.

I have a solids accumulation problem in the bottom of my pit/lagoon. Can Slurry King help?

Yes, this is one of the benefits of Slurry King: the bacteria break down the solids on the bottom of the slurry tank.  This has the additional benefit of reducing odour, as the solids are where the odour is made and stored.

In scientific terms, the unique Slurry King cocktail of bacteria converts the solids from high molecular weight to low molecular weight.  As the solids are lighter, they become suspended in the liquid within the pit, creating a more homogenous, liquid slurry, rather than a slurry that has three layers of crust, liquid and solids.  High build-ups of solids can take more than one cycle to clean out completely.

I have a crusting problem in my pit/lagoon. Can Slurry King help?

Yes, Slurry King Pigs and Cattle have been developed to assist the biological decomposition of slurry organic matter that acts as the glue between individual strands of hay, straw etc.

Once this glue is removed, the straw etc becomes free floating and much easier to mix in and spread.

How do I calculate the volume of my lagoon/pit?

Lagoon and pits dimensions are measured (in feet): Length x Width x Depth x 6.25 (cubic feet to gallons conversion).

How much Slurry King will I need to apply to my lagoon/pit?

Slurry King Pigs: Applications will vary based upon the size of your tanks, how your tanks are used and whether you are home mixing or compound feeding. Contact us on 0800 083 0720 for an accurate quantity estimate.

Slurry King Cattle: Applications are based upon the number of cows feeding the slurry pit.  See Slurry King Cattle usage instructions PDF for full details of application rates or use our simple calculator.
